Snowmageddon 2014

snowmageddon

Atlanta’s ice & snowstorm last week got lots of national attention for the impact it had on our city.  The 4 inches of snow was not the problem for our roads and drivers, but the three inches of ice that was underneath the snow was.

Many people from outside the city have suggested that our leaders are incompetent and our drivers are lacking certain talents.  With respect to the weather event, those facts or speculations are actually completely irrelevant!  Much of the traffic snarl was created by trucks with drivers not from Hotlanta!

Atlanta experiences a significant ice and snow event once every 3 years or so.  Typically if we know, everyone gets milk and bread if they have kids and beer if they don’t.  Then we get ready for a 2-3 day party.  Our snow removal equipment, sun and our wonderful climate takes care of the rest.  Friday schools were closed, and yesterday we were riding with our convertible car tops down enjoying the 70 degree weather.

For Atlanta to invest in sufficient equipment to clear our roads would be a very bad investment.  Instead businesses should be prepared for the storms that come and have alternative procedures in place.

At I-BN we moved all of our systems to the cloud years ago.  Our staff had access to all systems and information.  Our customers were all up and running; ZERO downtime resulted from the storm.  Like our city, I-BN can improve its preparedness, and is taking actions to improve our advanced preparations.   Specifically we are looking to improve our communications infrastructure to provide more feedback to customers on the status of our team, and how to ensure rapid support for critical issues when our support team is offsite.

So the next time there is ice and snow in the south, be prepared to see an unprepared city enjoy a few days of sledding, and know that your systems will remain up and running in our awesome data centers powered by people working from home.

If you want to know how we can help you avoid any of these problems in the future, give us a call at 678-627-0646 x230.
